“A deep dive into the past and present of Mississippi politics suggests the importance of the deep connections between democratic responsiveness, power, and health. There are reasons to be skeptical that increased political participation by black residents of the Delta, such as turning out to vote in greater numbers, will lead to the adoption of policies aimed at improving the social determinants of health in the Delta. Systemic and institutional barriers to power suggest that such policies cannot happen without the support of white residents, particularly those living in other parts of the state. More broadly, health equity is not likely to be achieved unless leaders outside the area with the greatest need buy in and step up.” -David Jones

David was an unfailingly kind, deeply compassionate person who consistently sought to understand and improve the lives of family, friends, and members of the community. David was an excellent listener and wonderful storyteller, believing there was no better way to understand how policy affected health than talking to people and policymakers in places with some of the worst health outcomes in the U.S.

The David K. Jones Scholarship Fund is a permanently endowed fund, which will provide annual need-based scholarship awards based on financial need to one or more graduate students in an under-represented population at the Boston University School of Public Health, with a preference for students interested in studying health policy and committed to social justice.
