Shroff Family Committed to Preparing the Next Generation of Public Health Leaders
Zubeen Shroff, chair of SPH’s Dean’s Advisory Board, and his family have pledged to support the school and its SPH45: Public Health. Now is the time. campaign to advance scholarship, research, and practice.
“People used to say that professionals would benefit from an MBA mindset,” says Zubeen Shroff (CAS’86). “Today, the world would benefit if the next generation of leaders had a public health mindset.”
Shroff just completed his first year as chair of the Dean’s Advisory Board (DAB) at the School of Public Health, assuming the role in January 2020, at the start of the most critical time for the field of public health.
As a managing director at Galen Partners, a healthcare growth equity investment firm based in Stamford, Connecticut, Shroff has brought more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry to his role. He is keenly aware of the progress the healthcare field has made, as well as the challenges that remain—including the health inequities that the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated.
Shroff joined the DAB in 2016 with an appreciation for public health values, including specific attention to the social, racial, economic and environmental factors that influence health outcomes. He says he is also motivated by his family, whose careers revolve around the social good: his wife, Anahaita, is the CEO of Lifting Up Westchester, which provides support and services to the homeless population; his son, Zal, is a civil rights attorney, and his son, Kaivan, is a political commentator, and senior advisor to the Institute For Education in Washington, DC.
In honor of SPH45: Public Health. Now is the time, the school’s 14-month campaign that aims to elevate the conversation around public health and showcase research, scholarship, and practice, Shroff and his family have pledged to support SPH’s commitment to advancing the field, preparing the next generation of public health thinkers and doers, and closing the gaps in health inequities and disparities to create a healthier world for all populations.
“Before the pandemic, we were facing creeping public health crises that have ravaged our society, such as mental health, substance use, and gun violence,” Shroff says. “I could not be prouder of BUSPH and the community for elevating the conversations around these pivotal issues of our time.”
Shroff began his healthcare career as a product manager at Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, where he brought biotechnology products to market and was responsible for the commercialization of the drug alpha-Interferon, which was a first step in turning diseases such as chronic myeloid leukemia from a five-year death sentence into a chronic, but manageable condition. He subsequently became a principal at The Wilkerson Group, a general management consulting firm that advised other companies on how to effectively bring their innovative medical products to market.
It’s time to bring real solutions to the public health challenges of our time.
Now at Galen Partners, Shroff works with entrepreneurs to maximize shareholder value in a range of medical product and technology service areas designed to produce better health outcomes at lower costs.
“I am not oblivious to the fact that, almost daily, there are articles published about how the healthcare system isn’t working for people,” he says. “We acknowledge all of the wonderful progress we’ve made with investments in technology, but we have to ask ourselves, ‘what else is required to improve the health of the society at large?’”
As SPH celebrates 45 years of research, scholarship, and practice, now is the time for us to learn and invest together, he says.
“It’s time to bring real solutions to the public health challenges of our time, and invest in the future so the next generation can lead the way.”
