Professor Earns National Award for Excellence in Teaching
Christopher Louis received the 2024 Teaching Excellence Award for Healthcare Management and Leadership from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration for his longstanding commitment to healthcare management education.

Christopher Louis, clinical associate professor of health law, policy and management, is the recipient of the 2024 Teaching Excellence Award for Healthcare Management and Leadership from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), a global network of colleges, universities, faculty, individuals, and organizations dedicated to the improvement of healthcare delivery through excellence in healthcare management and policy education. The award is sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
Louis, who directs the health care management and dual degree programs at the School of Public Health, says he is honored to receive the award.
“This award connects two interrelated parts of my professional life: my time in industry and as an academic. My teaching philosophy is centered on bringing practical experience into the classroom, and I could not be more appreciative of the support that AUPHA and ACHE have provided me over the past twenty years in doing this at a high level,” says Louis. He began teaching at SPH after nearly a decade in healthcare strategy, operations, and project management as a healthcare consultant and administrator.
“Educators in healthcare management, leadership, and policy recognize that the dynamic and complex healthcare landscape requires teaching that emphasizes students’ learning, growth, and development that extends beyond the classroom,” said Jacqueline Wiltshire, chair of the Teaching Excellence Awards Selection Committee and visiting associate professor at the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School for Public Health. “Our colleagues who are receiving these teaching excellence awards have demonstrated an exemplary and holistic approach to teaching in these areas. AUPHA’s Board and leadership are honored to recognize their efforts and applaud their comprehensive and impactful teaching practices within the healthcare management, leadership, and policy education community.”
Louis earned his doctorate in health policy and administration from Penn State University. He also holds a Master of Health Administration from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Sacred Heart University. His research focuses on healthcare organization and delivery, Medicaid innovation programs, cancer care, children with medical complexity, and large-scale program evaluation.
Louis has served as principal investigator on multiple state, federal, and private program evaluations and research grants, and has recently published in journals such as the Journal of Health Policy, Politics, and Law, Health Care Management Review, and the American Journal of Accountable Care.
