Why did you choose BU School of Public Health and the MS in Public Health Data Science?

I majored in data science as an undergraduate, and I’m happy to see the perfect combination of population health and data science. Boston University has a lot of resources. The faculty at BUSPH have rich research experience and supply practical courses, which will prepare students well for future research and work. In addition, the 400 hours of research experience in the program will prepare students well for work and study. I feel strongly that the convergence of population health and data science can revolutionize public health research. Boston is also attractive as a city with strong medical and biotech growth.

Why Public Health?

With the COVID-19 outbreak, I discovered the importance of public health and epidemiology. It made me want to learn more about the industry and make my contribution. Public health needs people with different backgrounds and experiences, and diverse perspectives can generate a lot of different perspectives that promote the breadth of research. It’s interesting to discuss with them. I also believe that public health will play an increasing role in promoting the health of all humanity.

How have the faculty helped make your experience exceptional?

The faculty and staff at BU are also a big part of why I’m here. In this semester, I learned about the excellent research results of the teachers and felt the enthusiasm and rigorous teaching. In particular, MS in Population Health Research Program Director Dr. Andrew Stokes gave us a better understanding of the public health industry through his weekly Brown Bag seminar. At the same time, I was fully practicing how to apply machine learning models to solve public health problems in his lab.

What do you plan to do with your degree once you graduate?

I plan to work in the lab as a data scientist or pursue a PhD degree. I hope to use the skills I have learned to solve more problems in public health, especially in the study of population health.
