BUSSW Assistant Professor Astraea Augsberger speaks at “Black Minds Matter: Racism, Intersectionality, Spirituality, and Equity in Underserved Populations,” the inaugural event for Boston Medical Center‘s (BMC) Department of Psychiatry on May 13 & 14, featuring keynote speaker Congresswoman Ayanna Presley.

Augsberger’s talk, “Youth Advisory Boards in Healthcare Settings: Examples from Research and Practice,” will cover the structure, benefits, challenges, and activities of youth advisory boards and how they promote health equity in youth of color.  Joining Augsberger on the panel is Ja’Karri Pierre, a youth member from the BMC Youth Advisory Board, a group developed through the professor’s recent project on Youth-Led Health Promotion in partnership with BMC Family Medicine.

The conference will convene academic and community leaders to explore themes of intersectionality, youth mental health, culturally responsive treatment, and advocacy within Black mental health.

The event honors the department’s mission to bring together mental health clinicians, community-based organizations, mental health startups and funders to explore what is known, what is experienced, and what we can do better to meet the mental health needs of Black communities.
