Prof. Collins Receives Fulbright Specialist Award to Collaborate with Women & Children’s Rights Organization in Ghana

Prof. Mary Collins from BU School of Social Work has received a 2023 Fulbright Specialist Award to support her upcoming collaboration in Tamale, Ghana. For five weeks, she will be working with Songtaba, a human rights organization that advocates for women, girls, and other marginalized people in underserved communities. The project’s activities will focus on strengthening organizations’ capacity to target gender-based violence. This work includes:
- Reviewing and revising prevention and protection policies
- Visiting schools to co-develop child protection policies
- Meeting with girls clubs’ leadership to develop further strategies
- Developing training programs to strengthen staff capacity
Prof Collins is thrilled to be selected for this award and excited to work with Songtaba and the people of Ghana. “It’s a great fit with my interests and expertise in child protection, children’s rights, and international social work,” says Collins.
Collins is one of over 400 recipients receiving the Fulbright Specialist Program this year. Awards are given to those who display academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and a potential to foster long-term cooperation between the United States and other countries.
