We Hyun Chang
- Introduce yourself and why brought you to come to BU?
I am We Hyun Chang. I came to BU from Korea in the summer of 1993 to begin the M.Div hoping to work toward the Ph.D.
- What memorable (or unforgettable) stories like fun, challenging difficulties do you have while in STH?
The most memorable story is I met my wife – Rev. Dr. Yoo-Yun Cho-Chang- at BU STH! I also remember one afternoon in the fall of the very first semester. I was coming out of a class where I had a very hard time understanding the lecture due to a language barrier. I was frustrated that I could not fully understand in English and had a difficult time translating my Korean thoughts into English. In frustration, I went to a chapel service hoping to find a sense of comfort and hope. Due to the acoustic nature of the chapel, I literally couldn’t understand a thing other than hymns during the service. “What have I done to dare to come here thinking I would be able to get a degree? When should I return to Korea? How would I manage the disappointment from my family and friends?” The final memory is how the whole community – professors and friends of STH- have come together to help and support me to stay. One particular friend shared his hand-typed (good old days of typewriters) class note each week to help me and other international students.
- What is your current job or ministry and vision?
I am the district superintendent of Commonwealth East District of the New England Conference of the UMC. My vision is to take each day with deep trust in God’s goodness, open mind to all that I encounter, and a compassionate heart to hold all that God loves.
- Whatever you like to say to STH and people of School of theology.
Thank you for opportunities for me to grow in many different and open ways while I was there. Please continue to keep both the mystery and justice of God at the center of life together as STH.
