Faculty of the Methodist General Biblical Institute, 1847-67
Upon moving to Concord, New Hampshire, the Methodist General Biblical Institute was born. The President was the Bishop Elijah Hedding. Although, Hedding was seldom on campus, his acceptance of the position was critical, coming at a time when most bishops were skeptical about sending preachers to a school for special theological training.
The original faculty consisted of Osmon C. Baker, Professor of Greek, Homiletics, Church Government and Discipline, and his colleagues John Dempster, and Charles Adams, who respectively taught Theology and Ecclesiastical History, and Biblical Literature and Pastoral Theology.
Later instructors included: D.M. Brumagin, Assistant Instructor in Greek — William Butler, Lecturer of Religions of India — Joseph Cummings — Jacob Manning, Lecturer of Modern Infidelity — J. W. Merrill, Professor of Theology and Philosophy — J. W. Patten, Professor of Revealed and Pastoral Theology, and Sacred Rhetoric — Abel Stevens — Stephen M. Vail, Professor of Biblical and Oriental Literature — Orlando Whitney
