Faculty of Boston University, 1911-45

Lauress J. Birney graduated from Boston University School of Theology in 1899. He later became Dean of STH in 1911. Under his leadership, the school greatly expanded. He had a particular interest in missions, as he himself eventually became a missionary in China. His excitement for missions is reflected in the following list of professors from the 1916-1917 academic year.  Notice  the large presence of linguists and musicians on the faculty.

Albert C. Knudson was Dean of the School of Theology from 1926 until 1938. Knudson was always a scholar first and an administrator second. He even hesitated to take the job as Dean, worrying that it would interfere with his academic productivity. Nevertheless, he managed to keep the school running over those years while publishing four books The Philosophy of Personalism (1927), The Doctrine of God (1930), The Doctrine of Redemption (1933), and The Validity of Religious Experience (1937). He retired as Dean due to his failing health and the increased demands on his administrative function for the “Century of Service” campaign.[1]
