I studied creative writing at the University of Wisconsin – Madison before traveling for a few years and working as an editor in Minneapolis. When looking for good grad programs, I thought about getting an MFA in writing until I realized that I already knew how to write, and what I needed was to gain knowledge about what I should write ABOUT. The best answer turned out to be religion – specifically, the relationship between religion and science. And so I came to STH to earn an MTS, followed up by a PhD here at BU. Today, I do research on the evolutionary origins and functions of ritual, as well as cognitive styles, left-right ideology, and the religion-science dialog. But I didn’t abandon writing – I write a popular blog on the scientific study of religion at Patheos.com and am working on several longer works.
