Transformative Research

Building upon the R1-embedded nature of the University, the BU School of Theology faculty will lead locally, nationally, and internationally in theological and religious inquiries that exemplify excellence in scholarship, intellectual curiosity, research ethics, innovative leadership, and practical applications amid changing academic, ecclesial, and social contexts.
Strengthen faculty research support

STH will strengthen faculty research support through increasing annual research accounts, buttressing administrative support for grants, establishing dedicated funds for professorships, securing funding for post-doctoral fellowships, and honoring church- and community-facing work by faculty.

Strengthen support structures for junior faculty, new faculty, and promotion processes

STH will strengthen pre-tenure faculty mentoring and support structures, as well as build support for progression across all ranks. It will clarify expectations for promotions and strengthen onboarding of new faculty.

Increase visibility of faculty research and professional work

STH will launch a colloquium to highlight faculty research and interdisciplinary collaborations, publicly celebrate new book publications, and increase visibility of our faculty’s and doctoral students’ research.

Strengthen and seek creative coordination of certain keystone initiatives and/or programs in need of increased support and visibility

STH will buttress its Chaplaincy, Faith and Ecological Justice, Hispanic/Latinx, and Religion and Conflict Transformation programs, as well as grow Black Church Studies, the Theology and Arts initiative, and offerings in Theology, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. STH will explore strategic possibilities around Asian theology in collaboration with CGCM projects.
