Campus Minister/Wesley Foundation Director, University of Hawaii at Manoa
The California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church is looking for a Campus Minister/Wesley Foundation Director located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Under general direction of and in conjunction with the Board of Directors, the Director will provide oversight to Wesley Foundation’s programs and services, monitor and assess the effectiveness of campus ministry offerings, participate in the development of resources to support the ministry, and promote and support campus ministry in higher education among student leaders, board members, and local churches in the Hawaii District. This position is full-time, non-exempt and located in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Organization Overview
The Wesley Foundation at the University of Hawaii is a ministry to higher education of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church serving college students, faculty, and staff primarily on Oahu, Hawaii. While located across the street from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), the outreach of Wesley Foundation also extends to other private higher education institutions in the Honolulu metropolitan area including Hawaii Pacific University & Chaminade University.
The Wesley Foundation was chartered by thirty-seven students in September of 1949 and has provided a United Methodist presence to the University community for the past 66 years. Our ministry facilities are located on a double-lot campus and has two buildings: a three-level student center with a fellowship hall, kitchen, chapel, offices and parking; and a student residence, the White House, with a capacity for ten residents. Historically, Wesley Foundation has included, as a part of its programs and activities, students from a variety of denominational and faith backgrounds. The Wesley Foundation also strives to be an inclusive community that invites participation of individuals regardless of their ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, or physical ability.
In January 2009 the Board of Directors adopted the following mission statement, “The Wesley Foundation at the University of Hawaii is a United Methodist campus ministry that journeys with students as they discover, embrace and share their God-given gifts of intellect, compassion and leadership; living out Christ’s call to be disciples.”
The University of Hawaii at Manoa is part of a statewide, public higher education system that includes three four-year university campuses and seven community colleges throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Founded in 1907, the Manoa campus is the “flagship campus” of the UH system comprised of 14 Colleges and Schools offering Bachelor’s degrees in 97 fields, Master’s degrees in 85 fields, and Professional & Doctoral degrees in 57 fields. This 320 acre campus has a student enrollment of 20,000 students: 67% Hawaii (in-state) students, 27% out-of-state students, and 6 % international students representing over 119 countries. UH Manoa is known for its pioneering research in such fields as oceanography, astronomy, Pacific Islands and Asian area studies, linguistics, cancer research and genetics. The University’s motto is “Maluna a’e o nā lāhui a pau ke ola ke kanaka” (Above all nations is humanity.)
Supervised and evaluated by: Executive Director of Connectional Ministries, in consultation with the Higher Education and Campus Ministry Council (HECMC) and the Board of Directors of the Wesley Foundation.
Supervision responsibility for:
Employees
Bookkeeper; building manager; and outside contracted service providers such as custodial service, yard care and facilities related contracted workers.
Volunteers
Student Peer Ministers; Summer Seminary Intern; White House (student resident) Officers; Board Officers and members; and community volunteers.

Primary Roles, activities and responsibilities
Strategic Planning and Organizational Leadership
- Develop and implement strategic planning in conjunction with the Wesley Foundation Board, that is consistent with and complimentary to that of the mission and goals of the ministry.
- Create a vision for the planning and implementation of programs and services.
- Organize, develop and implement student-oriented programs and services that include, but are not limited to, student leadership development, spiritual development, fellowship & worship, community service, interfaith communication/collaboration, pastoral counseling, and social justice.
- Develop strategic alliances with administration and on-campus departments to provide ppropriate programs and services to students.
- Develop strategic alliances with United Methodist Churches to participate in a supportive campus ministry.
- Mentor, supervise and provide work direction to the Student Peer Ministers and the Summer Seminary Intern.
- Identify and implement best practices and policies for serving student needs.
- Represent Wesley Foundation on the University of Hawaii at Manoa Religious Council and on other university committees and councils, as requested.
Financial Management
- Work with the Wesley Foundation Board to develop, fundraise and manage the annual operating budget to meet organizational needs and objectives. Work with Board Officers/ members and the bookkeeper, to prepare an annual budget. Additionally, work with the aforementioned to monitor the budget monthly and quarterly to insure proper expenditures and resource needs.
- Collaborate with the annual fundraising campaign chairperson in developing an effective organizational structure that will ensure the financial sustainability of Wesley Foundation.
- Initiate and comply with financial audits required by The United Methodist Church structure.
- Work with the Board of Directors to comply with financial reporting under 501 c (3) when appropriate.
Evaluation and Assessment
- Conduct routine assessment of all Wesley Foundation programs, and provide evaluation and feedback to the Wesley Foundation Board.
- Complete timely evaluation tools required by HECMC.
- Comply with United Methodist and University of Hawaii requirements related to safe practices related to student contact and pastoral counseling.
- Comply with rules and guidelines for membership as a Registered Independent Organization (RIO) religious student group within the University of Hawaii system.

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of United Methodist history, polity, liturgy, and Annual Conference structures directly associated with campus ministries.
- Ability to live and communicate in an Interdenominational and Interfaith world.
- Knowledge of unique aspects of campus climate at UH at Manoa and the needs of contemporary students.
- Ability to utilize electronic forms of communication for promoting campus ministry and communicating with students.
- Excellent communication and listening skills.

- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
EDUCATION
Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
Significant and relevant life experience will be considered.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in campus ministry or equivalent.
