Part Time Operations Manager
Job Description:
The Operations Manager helps create a space of safety, welcome, and acceptance for members of the homeless community.
The Operations Manager is primarily dedicated to organizing needs for the BostonWarm Day Center. This includes orienting and training volunteers; receiving and storing food and drink donations; overseeing kitchen volunteers – and deciding when and how food and drink are shared with the community. In addition the Operations Manager networks by phone and email with staff, volunteers, and representatives from homeless outreach organizations throughout Boston; keeps track of work hours for our paid BostonWarm staff; compiles and shares shopping lists with our “BJs Angels” volunteers who purchase supplies for BostonWarm; arranges for reimbursement for covered expenses.
The Operations Manager supports and advocates on behalf of the community and supports the work of other paid BostonWarm staff and volunteers.
This position is part time and reports to the Executive Director of common cathedral.
Specifics:
• Set up and replenish coffee, snacks, creamer, napkins, etc.
• Greet guests as they arrive, making them feel welcome, adding to the positive spirit of the center
• Engage with guests at every level, from casual to deep pastoral listening; offering a spirit of compassion and respect, sharing faith perspectives as appropriate
• Help connect guests with local resources such as clothing donations, detox programs, job training, housing access, and community meals
• Help to maintain safe space by helping keep an eye on the room, defusing conflicts, intervening to keep drugs and alcohol out of the space, working cooperatively with staff and volunteers to manage tensions, and if necessary, asking guests to leave for the day
• Support volunteers with encouragement and mentoring
• Coordinate with other staff and volunteers to manage program logistics
• Coordinate with food rescue organizations and food donors to provide guests with ready-to eat and easily reheated foods such as sandwiches, salads, pizza, and fruit
• Assist in keeping the space clean and orderly
• Spend time at the end of each program day for staff check-in about people and situations. Keep the Executive Director updated (in person, by phone and/or email)
• Work in partnership with the host church staff on space related issues
• Attend periodic gatherings of Boston’s outreach providers on behalf of common cathedral
• Attend periodic common cathedral staff meetings, retreats
Time commitment: 7 hours/day, one or two days/week, plus another 2-3 hours (weekly or biweekly) for outreach or staff gatherings.
