Per Diem Chaplain: Brighton, MA

Per Diem Chaplain as St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (Brighton MA)

St. Elizabeth’s is an acute care hospital in the Brighton-Allston region of Boston.  We are part of a current network of hospitals in eastern Massachusetts and our patients are from the local area as well as transfers from Holy Family (Methuen, Haverhill), St. Ann’s (Fall River), Good Samaritan (Brockton), Carney (Dorchester), as well as some other smaller facilities.  St. Elizabeth’s was founded by the Franciscan Sisters of the Allegheny then sold to the Archdiocese of Boston before being bought by Steward, who is the process of potentially selling our facility.  The hospital has just shy of 300 in-patient beds which includes 38 ICU beds, a level 3 NICU, two behavioral health units, an in-patient detox unit, an outpatient Dana Farber satellite, and the usual mix of ortho, cardiac, surgical, oncology, and other specialties.  Palliative is a growing program that we a strongly integrated into.

Our interfaith department includes chaplains from a range of different religious traditions, as well as two Catholic priests.  The full-time staff include myself, a palliative/ICU chaplain (M-F), a full-time priest (Wed-Sun), and a ½ time priest (Mon-Tues).  Our per diem chaplains vary from a few who have “regular” hours during the week (on-call pager & med/surg – 40 hrs, mother/baby – 10 hrs), to those who regularly cover on-call shifts from home 5 PM – 8 AM, to several who fill in either in-hospital or for the on-call shifts.  In addition, we have volunteer Eucharistic Ministers as well as contextual education students from BC and St. John’s Seminary (Catholic).

We have two goals with this position: 1) to cover two in-hospital shifts from 8-5 holding the on-call pager and rounding on med/surg; and 2) to cover several on-call shifts at night from home.  In addition to the regular ~20 hrs/week on the day shift, there will be a number of opportunities take up to 40 hrs/week in-hospital to cover personal leave and vacation.  Our preference will be for someone able to work Saturday and/or Sunday days in-hospital, but that is not required.  We have at least three weekly on-call shift to assign to a new per diem immediately and there is ability to pick up more due to vacations.  Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, or Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) language skills would also be useful.  Based on our patient population, experience with Jewish and Muslim spiritual care would be preferred.  Just so you are aware, our per diem pay rates are set by the hospital and are $26/hour for in-hospital time and $4/hour for on-call periods.  There are no benefits attached to this position.
