Protestant Chaplain – Campus Ministry
Georgetown University has a longstanding commitment to cultivating the intellectual and spiritual life of its students, faculty, and staff. The Protestant Chaplain is part of the interfaith Office of Campus Ministry and facilitates Georgetown’s Protestant ministry to the Law Center and Main Campus communities through outreach, worship opportunities, spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, community building, and facilitation of other programs, services, and events. The Protestant Chaplain will also support Georgetown’s Protestant ministry presence across all campuses in connection and conversation with the University’s Director of Protestant Ministry.
As member of Campus Ministry, the Protestant Chaplain also contributes to an ecumenical and interfaith ministry environment. The Protestant Chaplain works in collaboration with the other Law Center and Main Campus chaplains to serve these communities.
The Protestant Chaplain upholds the values and ideals of Georgetown University as a Catholic institution in the Jesuit educational tradition. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Cultivates an environment at the Law Center that includes faith formation and community building, including worship opportunities, Bible study, spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, social justice organizing, retreats, book studies, conversation groups, and prayer or meditation groups.  Helps organize and implement existing programs such as the Center’s “Faith and Justice” conversation series and its “What Matters and Why?” series, and seeks growth in new areas.  Manages the necessary administrative tasks related to the planning and executing of programs and events.
  • Provides pastoral, spiritual, and emotional care for the Main Campus community, including worship opportunities, retreats, spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, Bible study, and fellowship groups.  Attend main campus meetings related the overall ministry of the office.
  • Supports overall campus Protestant Ministry programming and events in connection and conversation with the University’s Director of Protestant Ministry

Requirements

  • Ordination within a Protestant Christian tradition.
  • Master’s degree – Master of Divinity or similar degree in the areas of theology, ministry, or religious studies.
  • Background, familiarity and experience with the African-American Gospel tradition, worship and religious practice.
  • At least three years of ministerial experience inclusive of preaching/worship leadership, program planning, pastoral counseling/direction, and budget management – with preference for experience on a university campus.
  • Possession of personal and moral maturity, cultivation of continual personal growth, and the ability and willingness to work creatively in tandem with the other chaplains to build harmony and integrity within an interfaith ministry.
  • Computer proficiency, including email, Microsoft Excel and Word, and Internet, as well as an aptitude for utilizing social media.
  • Ability to take initiative, using excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, readily engaging students, faculty, administrators, and staff through active outreach, presence and accessibility.
  • A ministry approach that includes creativity, flexibility, and collaboration.
  • Comfortability with engaging interfaith and interreligious issues, with deep respect for persons of different or no faith traditions while firmly grounded in his or her own.
