Rev. Dr. Stanley Samuel Harakas (STH ’65)
“The Rev. Stanley S. Harakas, a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, is Archbishop Iakovos Professor of Orthodox Theology, Emeritus, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, Mass.
Born in 1932, he was ordained in 1956. He earned undergraduate and theology degrees at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, and a Doctorate of Theology (Th.D.) in Social Ethics and Sociology, from Boston University in 1965. He has studied at the School of Theology of the University of Athens and at the School of Theology in Thessalonike, Greece. He taught Ethics at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology from 1966 until retirement in 1995. He served as Acting Dean and Dean of Hellenic College (1969-1975) and Dean of Holy Cross School of Theology (1970 to 1980). He has been active in the Ecumenical Movement on local, state and international levels, serving in the Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation Commission of the World Council of Churches, in which capacity he was a plenary speaker at the Canberra Assembly of the WCC.
In 1986 he was the inaugural appointee to the first endowed chair at Holy Cross, the Archbishop Iakovos Chair of Orthodox Theology. His Alma Mater honored him in 2000 with the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity.
He is the author of eighteen books, both scholarly in the field of ethics and theology, and educational volumes for a popular audience. He has published over 180 articles published in scholarly journals. He wrote a weekly religious column in The Hellenic Chronicle, a national English language Greek-American newspaper from 1980 to 2001. From 1997 to 2004 he was the author of a weekly column in the English supplement to the Greek language daily newspaper, The National Herald Ethnikos Keryx), published in New York City and wrote a monthly editorial for the Hellenic Voice, a national Greek-American English language newspaper published in Boston, MA. For several years.
In January, 2002, he was appointed to establish a mission parish, Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church, in Brooksville, FL,. He retired from that position in July of 2010 after nine and a half years.
Rev. Stanley and Presbytera Emily Harakas are the parents of five children (three surviving) and are the proud grandparents of three grandsons (older) and four granddaughters (younger).
