Rev. Joseph Jenkins (STH’76) and Rev. Leodis Strong (STH’75) pay their last respects to John Lewis

At the steps of Brown Chapel AME Church in Selma, Alabama, where Rev. Leodis Strong (STH’75) serves as senior pastor, Rev. Strong and Rev. Joseph Jenkins (STH’76) connected after a memorial service was held for Congressman John Lewis.

Rev. Jenkins shares the following note with fellow STH community.

Please give a salute of honor to Congressman Lewis, the Honor Guard, and to ALL of our foot soldiers for their services and sacrifices which express and epitomize the best in our country and in all of us. When we salute and honor the best in them, you salute and honor the best in ourselves. Furthermore, it should not surprise anyone at all that the African Methodist Episcopal Church continues to the forefront and at ground zero in our quest for liberation, social justice, and total equality. After all, Nat Turner was a member of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. And, following the slave revolt which he led, Mother Emanuel was burned down and the AME Church was banned in SC. And, the Brown in “Brown v. Topeka, KS Board of Education” (the 1954 Supreme Court desegregation case) was Rev. Oliver Brown, an AME Minister. Let’s continue building a bridge from personal salvation to social justice…all in Jesus’ name.
