Health Insurance

INTERNATIONAL SOS – AVAILABLE FOR ALL STUDENTS

All students participating in one of the BU Sydney programs are automatically enrolled in comprehensive health and evacuation coverage provided by Chubb and administered by International SOS. Prior to arrival in Sydney, students will receive an e-mail from BU Study Abroad and ISOS informing them of all policy details.

The policy students are enrolled in for their time abroad, covers them substantially for various health services. Whilst on the program, students are likely to utilise ISOS differently depending on which health services they are looking to access, and subsequently how they may want to approach the financial component of these.

If an appointment is made with one of their in-network providers, there is scope to request Guarantee of Payment, meaning the student does not need to pay at any point in the process. Otherwise if the appointment is with an out-of-network provider, it is more likely that the student will need to pay for the appointment in full upfront, and then submit a claim afterwards to receive reimbursement.

If you need to locate a provider or request Guarantee of Payment while in Sydney, you can contact the International SOS Sydney Assistance Centre via phone or the app.

BUPA – AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

As mentioned on the Healthcare Providers page, students who are enrolled in programs which include a component of classes at The University of Sydney, also have coverage with BUPA. The top-line way to understand when you should use which insurance policy is best summarised as follows; if you are attending an appointment on-campus use BUPA, if you are off-campus use International SOS. Ultimately, when on-campus you can use your BUPA insurance to pay upfront for appointments, submit a claim for reimbursement with BUPA then be reimbursed via an Australian bank account. When attending appointments off-campus, it is more beneficial for you to use your International SOS insurance.

When attending a clinic on-campus just remember to take along your BUPA card and a form of photo ID.

Reach out if you have any questions!

We know insurance can get very confusing, (especially when you have the perk of multiple providers to pick from!), so please know that the BU Study Abroad Sydney staff are here to help you navigate this while in Sydney. Additionally, this will be covered off in great detail during Orientation.

If you have any questions about health insurance while in Australia before your arrival, feel free to contact busydney@bu.edu.
