Health Insurance

GEOBLUE – AVAILABLE FOR ALL STUDENTS

All students participating in one of the BU Sydney programs are automatically enrolled in comprehensive health and evacuation coverage provided by GeoBlue. Prior to arrival in Sydney, students will receive an e-mail from BU Study Abroad and GeoBlue informing them how to register and all GeoBlue policy details.

The GeoBlue policy students are enrolled in for their time abroad, covers them substantially for various health services. Whilst on the program, students are likely to utilise GeoBlue differently depending on which health services they are looking to access, and subsequently how they may want to approach the financial component of these.

If an appointment is made with one of the GeoBlue in-network providers, there is scope to request Direct Pay, meaning the student does not need to pay at any point in the process. Otherwise if the appointment is with an out-of-network provider, it is more likely that the student will need to pay for the appointment in full upfront, and then submit a claim with GeoBlue afterwards to receive reimbursement.

If you need to locate a provider or request Direct Pay while in Sydney, you can reach the GeoBlue Global Health and Safety Team directly via e-mail or phone.

  • Phone (24-hours): +1 (610) 254 8771
  • Website: www.geobluestudents.com
  • Email: globalhealth@geo-blue.com

Alternatively, if you have more general questions about your health insurance policy and what you are covered for, you can call the GeoBlue Customer Service team on +1-610-263-2847.

ALLIANZ OHSC – AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

As mentioned on the Healthcare Providers page, students who are enrolled in programs which include a component of classes at The University of Sydney, also have coverage with Allianz OHSC insurance. The top-line way to understand when you should use which insurance policy is best summarised as follows; if you are attending an appointment on-campus use Allianz, if you are off-campus use GeoBlue. Ultimately, when on-campus you can receive bulk billing through your Allianz insurance whereas to avoid paying a gap fee if at a facility off-campus, it is more beneficial for you to use your GeoBlue insurance.

When attending a clinic on-campus just remember to take along your Allianz card and a form of photo ID.

Reach out if you have any questions!

We know insurance can get very confusing, (especially when you have the perk of multiple providers to pick from!), so please know that the BU Study Abroad Sydney staff are here to help you navigate this while in Sydney. Additionally, this will be covered off in great detail during Orientation.

If you have any questions about health insurance while in Australia before your arrival, feel free to contact busydney@bu.edu.
