Introduction
Omphalitis (umbilical cord infection) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in newborns in developing countries. In areas where medical facilities and personnel are not available, lay health workers trained in community-based algorithms may be employed to conduct diagnoses. In a trial being conducted in Zambia, researchers in BU’s Center for Global Health & Development are testing the diagnoses by lay health workers against those of an on-site physician as well as a board-certified physician located in the US working with photographs.
RCS Contribution
RCS staff members Robert Putnam and Erik Brisson developed the remote pictorial assessment component of this project.
