Roy Wattanasin is a healthcare information security professional. He spends most of his time leading and developing the information security program, finding vulnerabilities, doing security awareness and working on other projects to always build “proactive” information security in. He was the lead conference organizer for Security BSides Boston 2013 and 2014.
Thomas Grundig – Boston University
Tom is the Information Security Operations Manager for Boston University. Before his current position he was the Security Lead for Boston University’s SAP implementation, where he lead in designing, building, and implementing the University’s SAP security model. Previous to this, he spent several years as the Assistant Director of Internal Audit at BU, where he managed the IT Audit process.
As Director, Communication & Training, Julie is responsible for ITS training programs, documentation, and communication for faculty, staff, and students. In addition, Julie’s team assists with ITS internal communication efforts, and participates in a wide variety of ITS projects, providing guidance around project communications and implementation strategy. Julie received her B.A. in English and her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College.
David Millar is Principal Information Security Analyst at Boston College. In addition to BC, he has worked in information security at University of Pennsylvania, MIT and Harvard. He received a B.S. in Physics from MIT
David Sherry – Brown University
David Sherry is the Chief Information Security Officer at Brown University in Providence, RI. He has institutional responsibilities for all areas of information security and privacy, and plays a key role in the records management program, regulatory compliance, and copyright law. Prior to moving to higher education he spent several years in financial services, with responsibilities for enterprise security governance and regulatory compliance, access controls and operations, identity management, and the security awareness program. A graduate of Providence College and Northeastern University, with certifications of CISSP and CISM, he is a frequent conference speaker on emerging security topics and best practices, a guest-lecturer throughout the academic year at several New England institutions, and a contributor to several security magazines and websites.
Patty Patria is the Chief Information Officer at Becker College. She has more than 15 years of experience in the IT industry, with more than 10 in higher education. She is responsible for providing strategic leadership in long-term and short-term planning, managing administrative and academic technology, overseeing the management of computer networks, servers, and personal computers, and ensuring compliance with information security laws. Patty holds a Masters in Business Administration from Suffolk University. She is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
Mehul Sharma – Boston University
Mehul Sharma, by lineage an Ayurvedic doctor (grown up making pharmaceutical & herbal medicines), and a certified musician from Musicians Institute, Hollywood, has a brief history within multiple dimensions of technology. His professional focus has been in 2 avenues:
1) Designing, Architecting & Deploying (end-to-end) existing commercial technology infrastructure across the Enterprise, Fortune and Defense space, Eg. Virtualization (VMware, KVM, Virtualbox & HyperV), Storage (from EMC, Netapp, IBM etc), Filesystems (Gluster, Lustre etc), High Performance Computing (MPI, PVM), Web Apps (webservers, databases etc) and similar other inter-related components.
2) Building Intellectual Properties & Appliances ground-up that exponentially bring down the Total Cost of Ownership. Some highlights being:
a) Designing of a next-generation converged switch, router and a storage system for the Founder & CTO of world’s 2nd largest networking company.
b) Adhoc Mobile Wireless Base Stations (enhanced 802.11x standard) as a replacement for 3G & 4G technologies, along with 3-Dimensional Passive antennas which capture signals in all x, y & z planes.
c) He is currently developing the world’s first metadata-less parallel distributed filesystem and metadata-less amalgamated SQL+NoSQL database system in his mind & occasional free time at home.
Some of the above has been recognized by the European Union with a Europe-wide print publication. He is open to helping build open products, architectures, processes and security practices which eliminate vendor lock-ins & exponentially bring down the TCO.
Kim Bilderback – AT&T Services, Inc.
Kim Bilderback is Director of AT&T Government and Education CyberSecurity Services with nearly 10 years focus on network security for organizations large and small. His team supports AT&T security efforts in all 50 states resulting in a knowledge base of threat trends and security best practices nationwide.
Kim is a highly requested presenter and expert panelist on the topic of state government Cyber Guidebook for CountiesCyberSecurity, a contributor to the publication of NACO’s “” and most recently presented “Securing Big Data – What Governments Need to Know” at the National Association of State Technology Directors (NASTD) Eastern Region conference.
Previously Kim held leadership assignments as Director for AT&T Data Networking Services, AT&T Sales Center Vice President and Product Manager for AT&T High Speed Packet Services. In addition to his AT&T accomplishments, Kim has successfully led the technical sales efforts for three Internet start-up companies: providing managed cloud-based web hosting services; another delivering cloud-based data storage services and, finally, one providing cloud-based security services.
Kim has a BA in Political Science from Boston University and an MPA in Public Policy from the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
Jeff Von Munkwitz-Smith – Boston University
Jeff has been Assistant Vice President and University Registrar at Boston University since 2012. Previously he served as University Registrar and Director of Summer Programs at the University of Connecticut. He is a Past President of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and also served AACRAO as Vice President for Information Technology and Director of the AACRAO Technology Conference. He is currently the editor-in-chief of AACRAO’s journal, College & University. He is a regular speaker on topics including student privacy rights, idenity and access management, student information system implementation, student retention, and sustainability at regional and national conferences. He has written for College & University, Educause Quarterly, and Business Officer. He holds a Ph.D. in South Asian Languages from the University of Minnesota.
