For several years, IS&T has provided McAfee AntiVirus to students, faculty and staff to help protect their computers (desktops, laptops, and servers) against viruses and malware. McAfee has served us well but, as malware adapts and becomes more sophisticated, our protection tools must also become more sophisticated.
The Information Security Office, along with Client Technology Services, are currently in the process of reviewing and testing products in this area. The outcome of this search will be to identify a next generation tool that not only prevents known malware, but will also be effective at preventing unknown malware or other malicious actions based on detected behavior. Utilizing machine learning, as well as the aggregated data and experiences of other customers using the same tools, these tools are more effective at detecting new and emerging threats without the requirement of regularly updating a virus definition file.
Once the preferred vendor is selected, the team will begin a phased rollout process starting in early 2020. Watch your inbox for communication about this improved service, visit Information Security’s website for more security news and information, and feel free to contact us with any questions.
