Stephen Scully, a Classicist, has had a long-standing interest in translation, both as a practionerer and a student of translation. He has translated Plato’s Phaedrus, with interpretative essay and commentary (Hackett Publishing House), and, with Rosanna Warren, Euripides’ Suppliant Women (Oxford University Press in the Greek Tragedy in New Translation Series). He also wrote the Introduction to Chapman’s Homeric Hymns and Other Homerica (Princeton University Press), and has published on Dryden’s Aeneis in Virgil and His Translators (Oxford University Press) and translations of Homer from Chapman to Derek Walcott in Arion, A Journal of Humanities and the Classics. His graduate seminars include both discussion of and practice in translation and he teaches a course on Englished Homer.
