Working Hours Stipulations

  • UROP stipend awards are paid as weekly salaried payments through Student Employment.
  •  Students are not eligible to work more than 20 hours/week during the academic year across on-campus jobs.

However, if you work 10 hours/week during the academic year for a UROP stipend and an additional 10 hours on another job or on the same research project, you may be eligible to receive payment from work-study funding or departmental for the additional hours worked under the hourly guidelines listed above.

Policies Regarding Payments, Working Hours Stipulations, and On-campus Employment – Summer Awardees

  • UROP stipend awards are paid as weekly salaried payments through Student Employment. You do not need to enter hours weekly to receive your payment.
  • Students are not eligible to work more than 40 hours/week during the summer across on-campus jobs, even if the work is being conducted remotely.
  • Students cannot receive double payment for working the same job. For example, if you work 20 hours/week during the summer for UROP, you cannot be paid with work-study or departmental funds for the same 20 hours worth of work. However, if you work 20 hours/week during the summer for a UROP stipend and an additional 20 hours on another job or on the same research project, you may be eligible to receive payment from work-study or departmental funds for the additional hours worked under the hourly guidelines listed above.
  •  All non-UROP commitments (additional jobs, volunteer positions, etc.) need to be discussed with your mentor.
  • If you are working for Orientation, Events & Conference Services, or another on campus job that provides payment for full-time work and provides housing, you are NOT eligible to receive summer UROP funding. No exceptions will be made. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact us, so we can get in touch with your supervisor.
  • University policy does not allow students to be hired for more than 40 hours of work/week. Therefore, during the 10 week-summer UROP program, we will not be able to hire you if you have other jobs on campus that put your total number of hours worked over 40. It is your responsibility to ensure that the hours for which you are hired across on-campus jobs do not exceed 40 per week.
  • It is federal law that you must be paid overtime for any hours worked over 40 per week. If you work more than 40 hours/week across on-campus jobs, UROP will not pay overtime. Your other on-campus job will be required to pay overtime.
  • You must notify, by email (and cc’ urop@bu.edu), your supervisor(s) for other on-campus paid jobs to let them know how many hours per week you have committed to conducting UROP research. You must also provide them with the dates of the program.
  • You must complete and submit the on-campus job notification form (through Jotform), signed by your supervisor(s) for each additional job you are working on campus.
  • Failure to follow these policies will result in cancellation of your award.
