The Language & Literacy Education program at Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development prepares future educators, researchers, and other professionals to understand how people develop as readers, writers, and communicators.
Students in the Language & Literacy Education program will gain a solid theoretical background in literacy, Deaf studies, and/or language acquisition, including topics such as language and cognition, reading research, phonology, American sign language, and more. They’ll gain practical skills on language and literacy assessment and instruction, too. The program also teaches students how to navigate fraught discussions about race, gender, class, and ethnicity in the classroom—and how to combat historical injustices head-on to be effective teachers in the field.
Boston University’s Language & Literacy Education program offers a Master of Education (EdM). Students enrolled in the EdM can choose from one of three specializations: language education, literacy education, and ASL/Deaf studies. Our flexible program accepts students during both the spring and fall semesters, and offers the option to complete selected courses online.
