The Master of Education (EdM) in Social Studies Education at BU Wheelock College of Education & Human Development is designed for teachers of social studies—including history, geography, economics, and more—who want to advance their knowledge as teachers and leaders. This master’s program, which is geared toward teachers who already hold teaching licensure or who plan on working outside the public school system, is rooted in social justice, challenging students to question preconceived notions and move toward an ethical practice.

As a student in the EdM in Social Studies Education, you’ll grow as a professional educator in social studies, whether you’re a classroom teacher, a museum educator, or curriculum developer—or any other professional whose work focuses on instruction in social studies, which includes the disciplines of history, government/civics, geography, economics, and the other social sciences. The master’s in Social Studies Education can be completed in a year (if taken full-time; part-time options are available). In addition, this flexible program offers the option to take some courses online.
