Miriam Alfaro Ortez
Senior Education Advisor, GEAR UP
Miriam Alfaro Ortez is the senior education advisor at East Boston High School through the college access program GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. In this role, Ms. Alfaro Ortez works with youth in grades 9-12 to increase postsecondary expectations, readiness, and enrollment. Students are given the resources to make informed decisions on their future and assisted their first year after high school graduation.
Previously, Ms. Alfaro Ortez was a college advisor at a different Boston public high school, through the College Advising Corps—Boston University. There she pushed their mission to increase the number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students entering and completing college. Ms. Alfaro Ortez’s personal experience as a BPS alum and East Boston resident allows her to connect with students.
