Japanese Art Talk and Sushi with Professor Timon Screech

On Monday, March 26, join Professor of Art, Timon Screech, for his talk, “The Art of Casual Encounter: Looking Backwards and Brushing Sleeves in Edo-Period Japanese Art.”

The talk will be held in room B19 in the School of Theology, 745 Commonwealth Avenue, at 5pm. Sushi will be served.

Timon Screech is Professor of Japanese Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.  He is the author of many books in both Japanese and English on Edo-period art.  His 1999 book, Sex and the Floating World: Erotic Imagery in Japan, 1720-1810 (released in a 2nd edition in 2009) established him as one of the world’s leading authorities on Japan’s erotic shunga prints.  He will speak about his new research on the representation of urban erotic encounters outside the boundaries of the “pleasure quarters” in 17th century Japan.
