WLL Chinese Program Hosts Chinese Calligraphy Workshop

1st

On September 29, the Chinese program held a cultural workshop on the Art of Chinese Calligraphy. Chang Laoshi came and taught students the basic techniques of writing with a writing brush and ink. To practice calligraphy requires the basic tools of ‘four treasures of the study’ – brush, ink, paper, and ink stone. Therefore, Chang Laoshi began the event by introducing the tools and different writing scripts, such as the Standard scripts, the Clerical script, the Running script, Seal scripts, etc. Then he gave a demonstration of how to hold a brush and write Chinese characters. Students were fascinated by the artistic writing form and were eager to practice by themselves. They learnt to write their names with the brush and ink and also tried different writing scripts.

The event was made possible only with the help from Mr. Weijia Huang and Qi Song, who worked hard to book the room, decorate the place, and purchase refreshment before the event, and offer help to students during the event.  We also need to thank Hongyun Sun, the head of the Chinese Language Program, for providing writing brushes and ink, as well as funding for refreshment.

In China calligraphy occupies a distinguished position in the field of traditional art. It is not only a means of communication, but also a means of expressing a person’s inner world and a way to cultivate one’s character.
