Petrus Liu Receives Research Grant From the Ford Foundation

Together with his Co-PI’s (Lisa Rofel, UC Santa Cruz and Paul Amar, UC Santa Barbara), Professor Petrus Liu received a $240,000 multi-year research grant from the Ford Foundation to study communications gaps and governance solutions for China’s development finance in the global South. With the support of the grant, Professor Liu will lead an international team of researchers to produce a cultural commentary series analyzing the central role of gender/sexuality in China’s relationships with Africa and Latin America. Some of this scholarship will appear in his new book, The Specter of Materialism: Queer Theory and Marxism in the Age of the Beijing Consensus. After the pandemic, Professor Liu and his collaborators hope to resume other activities supported by the grant, including the production of a documentary and presenting policy recommendations at international civil society forums. Congratulations to Professor Petrus Liu!

Professor Liu has also published three works this year: The Wandering Earth, Gender, Sexuality, and Geopolitics, an edited collection of essays in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture
