Professor Katherine O’Connor to moderate academic symposium, “Revival of Art and Culture After World War II”
The Rubin-Frankel Gallery at Boston University Hillel is proud to present an academic symposium: Revival of Art and Culture after World War II, featuring a panel of distinguished speakers from around the world who will examine topics related to the art exhibition Faces of Revival: Postwar Russia in the Art of Felix Lembersky, including the intersection of realism and modernism, Socialist Realism and non-conformism, Judaic and Christian symbols in modern Jewish art, and the revival of art after the trauma of war.
The panel of guest speakers includes:
• Alison Hilton, Ph.D – the Wright Family Professor of Art History and director of M.A. Program in Art and Museum Studies at Georgetown University. Professor Hilton’s major area of research and publication is Russian and Soviet art with focus on nonconformist art, Impressionism, Russian folk art and women and gender issues.
• David Shneer, Ph.D. – Professor of History at University of Colorado. His work concentrates on modern Jewish society and culture, modern Russian and Jewish history, and the history of Jews and sexuality.
• Irina Karasik, Ph.D – Art historian and senior research curator at the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Karasik published extensively on Russian and Soviet art.
• Joe Troncale, Ph.D. – Associate professor of Russian Literature and Visual Studies at the University of Richmond. Dr. Troncale curated two exhibitions of contemporary Russian painting and non-conformist art. He has published on literature, film, and painting.
The symposium will be moderated by:
• Katherine O’Connor, Ph.D. – Professor of Russian in the school of Arts and Sciences, Modern Languages and Comparative Literature at Boston University. Her studies focus on 19th and 20th century Russian prose and poetry, literary translation, and general humanities.
