Lennon Artwork on Display, for Sale
Yoko Ono presents 100 pieces by former Beatle
Still looking for ways to spend that government stimulus check? Stop by the Ho tel Indigo in Newton this weekend and check out the 100 or so pieces of John Lennon artwork for sale —some for as little as $200.
The event is billed as “a look into John’s life through his artwork.” Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, together with Legacy Fine Art Productions, is presenting a collection of Lennon’s art on paper, from 1968 to just before his death in 1980, comprising mostly limited-edition prints, some signed, and song lyrics that center on peace, love, and hope. Prices range from $200 to $18,000.
Lennon attended the Liverpool Art Institute between 1957 and 1960, before the Beatles became a full-time job, and he continued to draw throughout his life. He worked mostly in pen, pencil, and Japanese sumi ink. A portfolio of his lithographs is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Titled Power to the People, this weekend’s display, which is part of an annual traveling exhibition of Lennon’s artwork, also is helping to raise money for charities around the world. Visitors will be asked to donate $2 at the door to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Boston.
Power to the People is showing on Friday, June 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Indigo, 399 Grove Street, Newton, Mass. The exhibition continues on Saturday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 617-969-5300 or 888-ART-1969 for more information. The hotel is near the Riverside T station. Hop on the Green Line D train at Fenway Station on Park Drive; it’s a straight shot to Riverside.
