YouSpeak: Sexual Assault
Has there been a change in attitude?
Today marks the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Week, the annual nationwide campaign promoting public awareness of sexual assault and prevention. Student organizations and University departments across campus are teaming up all week to sponsor events about sexual violence—its prevalence and its prevention.
Sexual assault is one of the most troubling issues on college campuses. According to the BU Police Department, there have been six rapes reported on campus since September. BU has numerous resources that offer assistance to any member of the BU community who has been the victim of sexual assault (see below).
The issue has been increasingly scrutinized nationally, thanks in part to the acclaimed documentary Hunting Ground, which was nominated for an Academy Award this year. As the University observes Sexual Assault Awareness Week, “YouSpeak” asks: “Have you noticed a change in attitude toward sexual assault?”
“YouSpeak” typically appears on Mondays. If you have a suggestion for a topic, leave it in the Comment section below.
Student victims of any crime, including sexual assault or domestic violence, are urged to seek help from any of the many crisis intervention, counseling, and student services available to them, both on campus and in the community. Crisis intervention counselors are available through the Sexual Assault Response & Prevention Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 617-353-7277. Students may also call the BU Police Department at 617-353-2121 or the Dean of Students office at 617-353-4126 for assistance. Employees needing help may contact the Faculty & Staff Assistance Office at 617-353-5381 or by email at fsao@bu.edu.
