Boston University’s Charles River and Medical Campuses will resume normal operations Wednesday, March 14, 2018, effective at 6 am, after a major snowstorm dropped more than a foot of snow on the city Tuesday. University maintenance crews have worked around the clock to remove the snow from sidewalks and parking lots on both campuses. MBTA officials say they expect T service and commuter rail service to operate on a normal weekday schedule, but warn that delays may occur.

    1. Given how much the students invest in their studies, it’s irresponsible to have a snow day at all. It should take a lot more then a 16″ of snow to prevent the university from opening. Let faculty sleep in their offices if they are so concerned about getting to work. BU does a great job with the sidewalks and the T kept running so no valid safety concerns.

      1. I’m someone with a physical disability and I cannot carry more than 10 pounds on my back. I have to use a rolling backpack. I live on campus, and the sidewalks were actually not walkable yesterday for someone who needs mobility assistance or who uses a rolling bag. I walked out to get food and almost slipped multiple times on ice caked roads and sidewalks. So no, it was not irresponsible to have a snow day yesterday.

  2. Poor decision! Risking the safety of students and faculty as well as saying yourselves the T WILL have delays tomorrow and travel conditions will not be favorable! Coming from a Bostonian this is a very poor choice!

  3. A delay would have been nice to allow people to clean up more in the morning…but whatevs I’ll be in the office with little complaint since I’m an adult.

    Though a useful tidbit would be if Harry Agganis Way is open/closed to traffic in the morning.

    1. Hi Eddie,

      Yes, Harry Agganis Way will be closed tomorrow to accommodate snow removal efforts. Due to this closure the BUS stop located in front of 33 Harry Agganis Way will be relocated to the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Harry Agganis Way.

      1. Hi Tim,

        I park at Agannis or Buick St. Closing Agannis Way makes it very difficult for those of us who are traveling east on Comm Ave to get to those lots since that is the only access street where a left turn is allowed from Comm Ave. Having to go all the way to the BU Bridge and turn around is not only frustrating, it’s a waste of time and gas. Same goes for leaving the garage in the evening and having to sit in the pileup that happens on Buick St. That is a very short light that coincides with the walk signal, so some cycles only one or two cars can get through. I suggest opening Agannis Way to one way traffic accessing the garage in the morning and leaving the garage in the evening.

  4. I am extremely grateful the campus will be open on Wednesday as I have travelled from New Zealand to work in the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Centre and have to go home on Friday. I do hope everybody who attends tomorrow will be safe, and thank you for having me.

  6. Super unsafe and irresponsible choice. This puts students and faculty at risk. Commuter students and off campus students will struggle to make their way to class. Staff and faculty need at least a delay for travel purposes.

  8. This continues to be a trend at BU. Close the day of the storm but when there’s a Blizzard that drops almost two feet of snow on the city, we will close for a day and then re-open with business as usual the next day. Sure, the campus may be clear. You have the resources to make it safe. However, take one step off campus, and you have students walking in the streets, staff unable to get to work or struggling to get to work because their streets are not plowed. Suffolk, Emerson and Northeastern all have delayed openings to allow for more time to dig out. Irresponsible and just careless.

  9. A delayed opening would have helped many families that are scrambling to arrange child care with school closings, delayed daycare openings, etc.

  10. I love how many on campus undergrads get VERY concerned about faculty and staff and commuter safety when they aren’t given a snow day. None of you seem to worry that the people who cook and clean for you have to show up in a storm.

While I understand the administration’s decision not to have a snow day today, it is always concerning how little the many employees who do not live within easy commuting distance of Boston are considered. How many faculty and staff members, like myself, live in cities and towns still under a snow emergency this morning? My city’s main streets are still not plowed. Not everyone who staffs the university is fortunate enough to live in Brookline, Cambridge, Arlington or Newton. Economic realities force many of us out to the further suburbs, and those suburbs were some of the hardest hit by yesterday’s storm. A delayed opening would have been the most prudent decision, and it was one many of our local counterparts made. I am blessed that I have an understanding supervisor, but many of my colleagues are not as lucky.
