When BU employees retire, they automatically become members of the Boston University Society of Retired Faculty & Staff, a large, informal group that holds a variety of activities on and off campus and various opportunities to get together with old friends, make new ones, work with the University to develop retiree benefits, and learn about what BU offers retirees.

A highlight of the academic year is the annual luncheon, at which all retirees and their spouses are guests. This event, on May 18, 2016, in the Trustee Ballroom at One Silber Way, will feature speaker Dick Lehr, a College of Communication professor of journalism, a former Boston Globe investigative reporter, and coauthor of the biography of mobster Whitey Bulger, on whom the movie Black Mass is based.

Recently the society has also:

  • Offered discounted tickets to Red Sox games.
  • Taken tours of Fenway Park and WBUR.
  • Informed retirees of a little-known death benefit available to some society members.
  • Awarded annual research and travel grants to members.
  • Worked with the University to develop a discount at the BU dental clinics.
