The director of Boston University's Washington Internship Program, Donald Robinson, recently was sworn in as a member of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS). The federal agency advises federal, state, and local governments on improving the nation's information services, including libraries and the Internet. Members serve a five-year term.

Robinson is an adjunct professor of political science at CAS, the University of Houston, and Texas Southern University, and is president of Robinson Associates, Inc., an educational and legislative consulting firm. He cofounded the Washington Internship Program two decades ago with his wife, Sara, who is also an adjunct professor at CAS. A library at the Boston University Washington Center, BU's headquarters for internships in the capital, is named in their honor. Robinson plans to retire from BU in June.

Peebles-Wilkins named Distinguished Practitioner

The National Academies of Practice has elected Wilma Peebles-Wilkins, SSW dean and professor, as a Distinguished Practitioner in Social Work for her stature in the field of health-care practice. The National Academies of Practice is composed of 10 academies, representing health care in dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy,

podiatric medicine, psychology, social work, and veterinary medicine. Only 150 active Distinguished Practitioners are elected to each academy.

Peebles-Wilkins began her career at BU as the associate dean for academic affairs at SSW in 1991. She was appointed dean in 1994.

Bulkeley named SME president for 2001

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has named Peter Z. Bulkeley, ENG professor emeritus of manufacturing engineering, its 69th president. Bulkeley vows to make the SME, a professional society serving the manufacturing industries, with more than 500,000 members in 70 countries, more agile, leaner, and more responsive to its members' professional needs.

While at BU, Bulkeley introduced the nation's first weekend Executive Master of Science Program in manufacturing engineering for working engineers. He also led the development of a new production technology laboratory at the University, in partnership with Germany's Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, and was cofounder of the Collaboration for Interactive Visual Distance Learning.

East meets West

The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a senior research fellowship to Steven Katz, CAS professor of religion and director of BU's Elie Wiesel Center for Judaic Studies, for the 2001-2002 academic year. Katz plans to complete a major book on comparative mysticism, combining the project with a semester-long sabbatical in India. There he hopes to augment his research on Hinduism and Buddhism.

Katz has been studying mystical traditions in Eastern and Western religions for the past 30 years. He has edited several volumes of essays on the subject, published by Oxford University Press. A collection of his own essays on mysticism and a reader are in progress. His current study and the book that will result, he wrote in his proposal to the NEH, intend to "bring together all of my former studies in a systematic and comprehensive presentation of mystical phenomena."

BMC awarded ultrasound accreditation

The ultrasound service of the department of radiology at Boston Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in ultrasound as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology. This is the second consecutive term that the ultrasound service at BMC was granted this accreditation.

The American College of Radiology is a national organization servicing more than 30,000 radiologists, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists, with programs focusing on the practice of radiology and the delivery of quality imaging services. The ACR Committee on Ultrasound Accreditation evaluates and accredits ultrasound practices in hospitals and private offices across the United States.

"We are pleased to have received this honor," says Ewa Kuligowska, chief of BMC's ultrasound section of the department of radiology and BUSM professor of radiology. "It is truly a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the entire staff."
