I want my maypole: Leave it up to the gals from the College of Practical Arts and Letters to do May Day right. This photo, taken on May 1, 1952, reveals a large audience on hand. However, the crowd may have been enticed to the ceremony through the misapprehension that PAL would be commemorating Beltane, originally a Celtic or Druidic festival of fire and fertility held on May 1. Ancient celebrants would drive livestock through fires for purification and increased fertility. The PAL celebrants, however, opted for the more familiar neopagan ritual of stringing flowers on maypoles and singing carols to welcome the summer. Photo by BU Photo Services |
