Satisfactory Academic Progress and Graduation

University Policy

College of Engineering Undergraduate Policy

The BS degree requires 131 to 135 term units of prescribed curricular courses, depending on the program selected. In addition to satisfying all BS degree requirements as listed below, a minimum of 48 units of coursework must be taken at Boston University in the upper-division program. The upper-division program consists of the program requirements and/or program electives as listed below for the junior and senior years. Social science, humanities, Hub electives, and/or writing courses taken during the junior or senior years cannot be counted toward this requirement.

It is generally expected that students will complete a minimum of 12 academic units per term with a Grade Point Index of at least 2.00. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 for all courses taken at Boston University is required for graduation. Units from PDP courses do not count toward the minimum number required, nor do the grades from those courses impact any academic standing issues.

Additionally, no more than 12 units with a grade of D may be applied toward coursework in the major (all courses except CAS WR 120, CAS WR 15x, and the four Hub electives). Four additional units with a grade of D may be applied toward CAS WR 120, CAS WR 15x and the Hub electives. (This policy complies with the University Policy on D Grades for Undergraduate Students.)

Students who have transferred courses from another college or university and have satisfied all program requirements, but are deficient in the required number of unit hours to graduate, are required to make up the deficiency by taking an academic course that carries Boston University units (except PDP courses). Courses graded Pass/Fail are not acceptable. Duplicate course units and courses below the level of the minimum degree requirements cannot be used to fulfill this unit deficiency.

It is generally preferred that unit deficiencies in technical coursework (engineering, mathematics, and natural science courses) be satisfied by technical coursework. A minimum of 30 units in mathematics and natural science is required.

All students will be asked to submit a graduation application and will receive a graduation review from the Undergraduate Records office. This is to ensure that all curricular and unit requirements have been, or will be, met in time for graduation.

Students who matriculated prior to September 2018 and transfer students who matriculated prior to fall 2020 do not participate in the Hub but must complete a general education requirement consisting of a minimum of 24 units, including CAS WR 120 and CAS WR 15x (or equivalent), and 16 units of social sciences and humanities. A unit deficiency in the social science and humanities requirement must be satisfied by a social science or humanities course, or by a modern foreign language course.
