Terriers Topple Cornell in New York City
Six BU players score for 6-3 win
The Terriers scored three goals in just over three minutes in thefirst period, and never looked back during Saturday’s Red Hot Hockeymatchup against Cornell. The two teams, renewing a hockey rivalrydating back to the 1920s, played before a sold-out crowd of 18,200 atNew York City’s Madison Square Garden, and six different BostonUniversity players lifted the Terriers to a 6-3 victory over the BigRed.
Freshman Joe Pereira (CAS’11) opened the scoring 8minutes and 50 seconds into the first period, scoring his first careergoal, and then assisted when Luke Popko (SMG’10) scored 18 secondslater. Brandon Yip (CAS’09) scored on a breakaway at the 11:06 mark tocap the three-goal spurt and set the pace for the rest of the game.
Eachteam found success on the power play in the middle period. Cornellfreshman Riley Nash put the Big Red on the board at 11:43 before theTerriers reestablished a three-goal cushion with a power-play marker bysenior Pete MacArthur (SED’08) six minutes later. Boston Universityenjoyed its largest lead of the contest at 5-1 in the second minute ofthe third, when freshman Colin Wilson (CAS’11) got a tip-in pastCornell netminder Ben Scrivens.
The Big Red narrowed the leadin the third period, using a tally by junior Jared Seminoff off assistsfrom sophomore Brendon Nash and senior co-captain Raymond Sawada to cutthe score to 5-2 with 16:16 remaining. Cornell senior co-captain TopherScott brought his team’s total to three with a score off a pass fromNash with 3:06 left on the clock. Then, with just over a minuteremaining, Cornell pulled its goaltender to put another player on theice for a six-on-five advantage. However, a blocked shot by Cornellfound its way to MacArthur, who set up classmate Bryan Ewing (CAS’08)for an easy empty-netter to close the books on the Terriers’ fourth winof the season. The team is now 4-7-2 on the year with a 3-3-1 HockeyEast mark.
The BU-Cornell rivalry dates back to 1925, when theTerriers posted a 7-2 win in the first meeting of the two teams. In thelate 1960s, when both schools were members of the ECAC Hockey League,they were fighting for the title every year, each winning the leaguecrown five times from 1967 to 1977. BU won national championships in1971, 1972, 1978, and 1995, and Cornell took home the trophy in 1967and 1970.
