An Explosion of Latino Culture
BU’s new student-run Latino organization, Alianza Latina, hosts 10 performing groups on Saturday, February 2, in the GSU Metcalf Hall

There’s a new student organization on campus this semester. Well, at least the name is new. Alianza Latina is the result of the merger of BU’s two Latino organizations, La Fuerza and Latinos Unidos. On Saturday, the group will host its first event, Explosion Latina, to showcase Latino culture through art, dance, and music.
“One of our goals for the event is to promote cultural awareness on campus and also to make the Boston University Latino community and the actual Boston community more united,” says Vanessa Arenas (CAS’09), who, along with Stephanie Abregu (CAS’09), is the organization’s copresident. “We want to expand everybody’s horizons on what Latino culture really is and its different forms.”
The show will feature performances from 10 music and dance groups from the BU and Boston communities, including the BU Ballroom Dance Team, Boston-based flamenco guitarist Juanito Pascual, and the Boston College dance group Fuego del Corazon.
Explosion Latina is open to the public and takes place on Saturday, February 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Hall, 775 Commonwealth Ave. Tickets are $7 each. Afterwards, BU’s Latino fraternity, Phi Iota Alpha, will host a party for students with a valid BU ID. Tickets for the party, which begins at 10 p.m. in the GSU Small Ballroom, are $5 each.
