Blues 101
Victor Coelho traces the history of the blues
Every lick that snaps from the E string of an electric guitar owes a debt to the blues.
The blues gave the Rolling Stones their attitude and brought soul to the Beatles’ pop.
In the video above, Victor Coelho delivers a primer on blues history and churns out a few licks of his own. The associate provost for undergraduate education and College of Fine Arts professor of musicology is both a musicologist and a performer. His expertise ranges from 16th- and 17th-century Italian music to popular music.
Coelho and his group, the Rooster Blues Band, will back up Chicago blues legend Lou Pride in the Words of Caution Blues Concert today, October 2, at 8 p.m. at BU Central, in the George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Ave.
The event is CFA’s third annual blues concert, part of the department of musicology’s efforts to make diverse musical styles accessible to BU students.
The Words of Caution Blues Concert, to be held today, October 2, at 8 p.m. at BU Central, is free with a BU ID and $5 for the public. Tickets are available at the door.
