Boston Actor Brings Walt Whitman to Life
Actor Stephen Collins performs Whitman's poems
Walt Whitman appears at Club Passim in Cambridge tonight, not live and not censored, in the person of Boston actor Stephen Collins, who will use dramatic monologue and poems to bring the great poet back from the grave. Collins’ one-man performance Unlaunch’d Voices: An Evening with Walt Whitman will incorporate poetry from Leaves of Grass, Whitman’s most famous collection of poetry, as well as poems from his years as a Civil War nurse.
An essayist, a journalist, and a humanist as well as a poet, Whitman is often referred to as the “father of free verse.” His poems broke the boundaries of traditional poetic form, as well as literary mores. Leaves of Grass was widely considered obscene because of its sexuality.
