Stop by Razzy’s Bar in Somerville on Saturday night for a free serving of “raw and tasty” music.
That’s one of the ways the Freeways guitarist Frank E. Butkus describes the sound of the local indie foursome.
“The Freeways’ garage pop,” he says, “is an amalgam of strong melodies and sweet harmonies laid over dirty, jangling guitar riffs.”
Butkus, who graduated from Berklee College of Music, and singer Karen Zanes, an Emerson College grad, formed the band in 2005. BU alum Mike Swidrak (CAS’06) joined later on bass. The BU community may remember Swidrak from his days as a DJ and the music and programming director for WTBU.
The Freeways draw on a variety of influences, from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Velvet Underground to the Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, and Morphine. In 2007, the band signed with Polk Records, joining other local acts Abolition Band, Beasts of England, Streight Angular, and Well Lit Place. The Freeways plan to further explore their musical boundaries at Razzy’s tomorrow night. “Live shows are an avenue to follow songs to new places,” Butkus says.
The Freeways take the stage at 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, followed by singer-songwriter Ryan Alvanos. Razzy’s Bar is at 585 Somerville Ave. Call 617-623-9784 for more information.
