BU Students Vote for Clean Energy
BU among top 10 schools pledging to Power Vote
In addition to voting for their favored presidential candidate, many Boston University students are voting for a broader notion — clean energy. BU is currently one of the top 10 schools in terms of numbers of students who have pledged to Power Vote “to make clean, just energy a top priority” when they go to the polls. Student groups at more than 360 colleges and universities are taking part in the nonpartisan effort, which is spearheaded by the Energy Action Coalition. The group hopes to elevate the issue of climate change in the 2008 election by mobilizing one million young “climate voters.”
BU’s 2,295 students pledged to fight against global warming and support alternative forms of energy and the creation of green jobs ranks the University seventh in the nation. Other top schools include the University of New Hampshire, with 3,616 pledges, the University of Georgia, with 2,657 pledges, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with 2,607 pledges.
When the total number of pledges reaches one million, Power Vote will collect and send them to the new president-elect in November.
“I think sending these votes will affect the new administration’s policies,” says Abhishék Seth (COM’12), media committee chairman for Power Vote at BU. “Power Vote will allow us to create a large national network we can use to work with the new administration.”
