Campus Eats: Boca Grande Taqueria
Kenmore Square location’s menu is big and cheap

When you walk in to Boca Grande Taqueria, the first thing you’ll see is the overwhelmingly (and unexpectedly) large menu. If you’re not making a beeline for one of the regular or extra-large burritos, take a moment to look over the selection of quesadillas, enchiladas, tamales, tacos, and meat and vegetarian platters. Most dishes can be made with a wide variety of meat and vegetarian fillings, from chicken, beef, and pulled pork to tofu and roasted vegetable options. The ingredients are fresh, the portions are large and served quickly, and spice fiends, rejoice! All dishes are available with extra hot sauce.
I recommend the chicken dishes, especially the enchiladas, served with refried beans and rice. And the tamales are arguably some of the best you’ll find for the going rate — steamed cornmeal and your choice of meat or vegetables stuffed into an extra-large, overstuffed cornhusk for only $5.95. Actually, every dish served at Boca Grande is under $6, making it the perfect place to get a satisfying meal even on nights when your wallet is extra thin.
For a complete dining experience, don’t ignore the imported Mexican bottled drinks and the aguas frescas, including horchata — a blended beverage typically made from almonds, cinnamon, and vanilla that tastes a bit like cold chai tea. Served as fountain drinks, they’re $1.75 each. Frida Kahlo watches over you — no, really, there’s a portrait of her hanging on the wall — as you raise a glass at this Kenmore Square standby that’s reliable any night of the week.
Boca Grande Taqueria is at 642 Beacon St. in Kenmore Square, 617-437-9700, and is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Boca Grande also has locations in Cambridge, Coolidge Corner, and Brighton.
