Kenneth Elmore received NASPA’s Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Performance as a Dean
From holding informal chats with students at his weekly Coffee and Conversation sessions to emceeing major campus-wide events, Kenneth Elmore, Boston University’s dean of students, reaches out to students in a variety of ways. Students have long expressed their appreciation for Elmore; this week, he received some national kudos as well, when the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region I presented him with the Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Performance as a Dean at the Region I conference in Hyannis, Mass.
The Scott Goodnight Award is given annually to a dean who has demonstrated efficiency in administrative skills and in meeting students’ emerging and immediate needs and who has earned the respect and support of the student body.
“This award exemplifies what being a dean of students is all about,” says Katherine Hasenauer, assistant to the dean of students. Elmore’s “willingness to be a spokesperson for the University and his open-door policy to students is unlike any other dean’s. He is someone who is really in touch with his students.”
Along with Raul Fernandez (COM’00), assistant director of the Howard Thurman Center, and David Zamojski, assistant dean of students and director of Residence Life, Hasenauer nominated Elmore for the award. She says that they have wanted to nominate him for several years, but he has always declined being nominated; this year, they did so without telling him.
Elmore’s personality makes him a naturally effective dean, Hasenauer says. “He’s just an open-minded, extroverted person, and that endears him to students. “He has always encouraged students to take their goals to the next level, and they see him as their most valuable resource at the University.”
NASPA, now also known as Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, was founded in 1919 at the University of Wisconsin to be the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy, and practice and to affirm the commitment of student affairs to integrating student life and learning. Scott Goodnight was the first president of the precursor to NASPA, the National Association of Deans and Advisers of Men, and hosted the organization’s first meeting .
