ENG Department Chair Named
Franco Cerrina, a University of Wisconsin–Madison professor, will lead the electrical and computer engineering department

Franco Cerrina, the Lynn H. Matthias Professor in Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has been named chair of the College of Engineering’s electrical and computer engineering department, effective August 15.
Cerrina, who has taught at the University of Wisconsin–Madison for 24 years, is also the director of the university’s Center for NanoTechnology, a research organization specializing in advanced semiconductor lithography and nanofabrication.
“I like the challenge of leading the ECE department in a time of rapid evolution and change, when disciplines are defined and often merge,” says Cerrina, citing the convergence of engineering and biology.
“There has never been a better and more exciting time to be an electrical engineer,” he says. “I want to get this message across to new generations of students.”
Cerrina will replace David Castañon, an ENG professor of electrical and computer engineering, who is chair ad interim of the department.
