Health Law Authority Is New Faculty Council Chair
Wendy Mariner elected to two-year term

Boston University Trustee Chair Alan M. Leventhal has announced that Wendy K. Mariner, the former vice chair of the BU Faculty Council, has succeeded Julie H. Sandell as council chair. The chair serves a two-year term as an ex-officio member of the BU Board of Trustees. Sandell is a professor at the School of Medicine.
Mariner, an internationally recognized health law authority and a professor in the department of health law, bioethics, and human rights at BU’s School of Public Health, is also a professor at the School of Law, where she is the faculty coordinator for the J.D./M.P.H. joint degree program, and a professor at the School of Medicine. Mariner says she is honored to have been elected to the position and urges all faculty to communicate regularly with Faculty Council representatives, to visit the council’s Web site, and “to weigh in on issues of the day.”
“Participating in Faculty Council has taught me at least three things,” Mariner says. “One: our faculty demonstrate a remarkably rich depth and breadth of talent and accomplishment; two: faculty in every school and college are dedicated to excellence, fairness, and openness in everything that affects our students, our colleagues, and our schools and colleges; and three: faculty can be a powerful force for positive transformations across the University.”
Mariner says that she is grateful to the Faculty Council officers, committee chairs, and representatives for helping to make the University a better place, and to President Brown for his leadership.
“It’s been a pleasure working with everyone,” she says. “I look forward to an even more productive future. It is truly a privilege to chair the Faculty Council, especially at this exciting time when our schools and colleges are beginning to gel into a more cohesive and dynamic university.”
Sandell, who has been Faculty Council chair for two years and vice chair from 2005 to 2006, joined the School of Medicine department of anatomy and neurobiology in 1991. She has been the vice chair of the department since 2004, and she currently is the chairman of the departmental Faculty Appointment, Promotion, and Development Committee.
