Hutter Named Dean of Dental School
Longtime prof and interim leader gets permanent appointment
After serving as interim dean since last November, Jeffrey Hutter has been appointed dean of the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Karen Antman, dean of the School of Medicine and Medical Campus provost, will announce Hutter’s appointment in a message to the Boston University community today.
“Dr. Hutter has a clear vision and plan to take the Goldman School of Dental Medicine to an ever-higher level of excellence,” Antman says. “His leadership and commitment to dental education, combined with his 11-year tenure at GSDM, have prepared him well for this opportunity.”
Hutter says that serving as interim dean has given him a clear sense of the school’s potential and goals.
“I’ve had the opportunity to truly get to know the school, and its strengths are its outstanding, dedicated faculty and staff and the quality of its students,” Hutter says. “It’s an honor and a privilege to become the third dean in the Goldman School’s history. My vision is for us to become a center of excellence, in oral health care, research, and clinical training for students.”
Hutter’s hopes for the school include continuing many of the initiatives started under the leadership of the late Spencer Frankl, who was SDM dean for more than 30 years, such as providing community-based educational and service opportunities for dental students and expanding the school’s global reach through the new BU Institute for Dental Education and Research in Dubai.
Hutter is a professor of endodontics and the Herbert Schilder Chair of the endodontics department. He also directs the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics and previously was SDM’s associate dean for academic affairs. He is also an adjunct assistant professor of endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dental Medicine.
He earned a D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, a certificate in endodontics from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, and a master’s in education and human development from George Washington University. He is a diplomate and a past director of the American Board of Endodontics and a past director of the board of directors and a past president of the American Association of Endodontists. Last year, he was elected chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.
Hutter became dean ad interim last fall, succeeding Frankl, who died in October. Hutter says it is “an honor to have that challenge of succeeding someone who left such a mark on the University.”
