Jewish Worshippers Thrive the World Over
Photojournalist to discuss “Jews of Color” at Hillel House this weekend
Most oftoday’s nearly 14 million Jews live in Israel and major cities in North Americaand Western Europe. But places like Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, South Africa,Peru, and even the Brazilian Amazon are also home to vibrant Jewishcommunities.
Theselesser-known Jewish enclaves are the focus of an exhibition at the Rubin-FrankelGallery at Boston University’s Florence and Chafetz Hillel House. The displaywas created by the nonprofit Scattered Among the Nations, which is dedicated toassisting and documenting geographically and politically isolated Jewish orJudaism-practicing communities.
Inaddition to photographs, the exhibition, Scattered Among the Nations Presents Jews of Color: In Color! will feature African pottery fromBoston’s Pucker Gallery. Bryan Schwartz, president of Scattered Among theNations, will visit Hillel on Sunday, February 24, at 1:30 p.m. to discuss whathe learned while photographing and writing about the Jewish communities thatappear in the exhibition.
ScatteredAmong the Nations Presents Jews of Color: In Color! runs through February 28 atthe Rubin-Frankel Gallery at Boston University’s Florence and Chafetz HillelHouse, 213 Bay State Rd. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday throughFriday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
