Last Day for Scarlet Key Nominations Nears
Katherine Hasenauer, an assistant to the dean of students, is accepting nominations of graduating seniors to the Scarlet Key Society until Friday, February 29
Each year Boston University’s Scarlet Key Society honors graduating seniors for their service and commitment to the BU community. Faculty and staff have until Friday, February 29, to nominate seniors they feel deserve this signal honor. After that date, Katherine Hasenauer, an assistant to the dean of students, will begin sifting through the nominations. The society will induct the chosen students at an invitation-only ceremony on Thursday, May 15.
“The Scarlet Key Awards are to recognize the extracurricular and cocurricular achievements of graduating seniors,” Hasenauer says. “It is an honor society of students who have made a remarkable difference to the student life of the University.”
Between 20 and 30 students are inducted each year, Hasenauer says. Past inductees have been involved in such things as establishing community service programs, mentoring classmates, or organizing major campus events, such as lectures with well-known political or international figures.
“Inductees are typically dedicated, forward-thinking, and able to balance the demands of academics and their outside activities,” she says. “They are students who try to carry out positive change at the University during their time here, be it subtle or wide-reaching.”
Nominations for the Honorary Scarlet Key Award, which is presented to faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, or other members of the BU community who have contributed to student life on campus, may be submitted by any member of the BU community.
A nomination letter and completed official nomination form must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, February 29, to the Office of the Dean of Students for both awards. Contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 617-353-4126 for more information.
